Linking databases with websites

Over the last five years we have developed the capability to publish virtually any ODBC compatible database to the web in an entirely secure manner.

Why link corporate databases with websites

The most successful companies are the companies that communicate clearly and efficiently. They are usually the same companies that manage information to perfection, knowing where they are for all key aspects of their business. By linking key business information with a website, companies are able to communicate in an efficient manner, internal and external to their organisation.

Our approach

The traditional (and most widely used) method of linking databases to websites require the website and the database to be in the same location. For this, either the database needs to be located remote from the company on a web server OR the website needs to be located on the company server and the server opened up to the internet. Both these approaches have inherent security and performance issues and are far from ideal.

When SFOL first started linking databases to websites in 2002 we wanted an alternative solution. Our approach was to create the web pages on the companies server using the data contained in the database and then upload the finished pages to a separate web server for viewing. This approach has proven to be so successful we have used it ever since.

We also use traditional methods, where needs demand so. Our approach is to select the appropriate method to provide the best solution. We support four methods of linking databases to websites:

  • Linking the database and website remotely with the database and the web pages on a web server.
  • Linking the database and website locally with the database and the website on our clients server
  • Creating the web pages offline from the database and then publishing to the web server.
  • Creating a replica of the database and linking the web pages online and synchronising with the local database.
